Kangaroo Flat real estate

VIC 3555 · City of Greater Bendigo · About 10 km from our East Bendigo office

Kangaroo Flat is a large outer suburb south-west of the Bendigo CBD on the Calder Highway, with its own railway station, schools and shopping centre.

The suburb

Crusoe Reservoir, Dower Park and Charcoal Gully

Kangaroo Flat took its current name after miners chased and caught a kangaroo. Gold workings were reported early in 1853 and finds at Crusoe Gully later that year set off a rush. The railway station opened in 1862 on the Melbourne to Bendigo line and by the mid-1860s there were seven hotels. Crusoe Reservoir was completed in 1873 to supply water to the goldfields.

After the war came industry, including a Dunlop belting factory in 1948 and a cotton mill in 1950. Several mid-1800s churches remain. Crusoe Reservoir is now a recreation park with a swimming beach. Charcoal Gully bushland reserve holds Chinese mining digs from the gold rush, while Dower Park is the main sporting complex and home ground of the Kangaroo Flat Football Club.

The suburb has three shopping precincts, including the Lansell shopping centre on the Calder Highway with Kmart, Coles, Woolworths and about 55 specialty stores. There is an indoor aquatic centre on Browning Street. Schools include Crusoe Secondary College, Kangaroo Flat Primary School, St Monica’s Primary School, a Glenvale Primary School campus and Bendigo Special Development School. V/Line trains run from Kangaroo Flat station to Bendigo and Melbourne.
