Quarry Hill real estate
Quarry Hill is a hilly residential suburb south of the Bendigo city centre, home to several fine Victorian and Edwardian houses.
The suburb
The Eyrie and Quarry Hill Golf Club
Quarry Hill was first known as Charcoal Gully, where an Anglican school opened in 1857. A State school named Sandhurst East replaced it in 1873 and the locality became Quarry Hill in 1908, after a nearby building-stone quarry whose filled-in site is now unknown. Bendigo Cemetery, established in 1858, is on the Victorian Heritage Register along with its chapel and funerary oven.
The hilly terrain saw little mining damage and forms a backdrop to several fine Victorian and Edwardian houses. The Eyrie at 18 Reginald Street, built in 1874, is the most notable and is on the Victorian Heritage Register. Edelweiss on Hamlet Street was built in 1890 for Sir John Quick, who helped found the Quarry Hill Golf Club. The Queens Arms Hotel dates from 1872.
Quarry Hill Golf Club is on Houston Street, while the Quarry Hill Recreation Reserve and Community Hall are on Hamlet Street. For schools, Quarry Hill Primary School is a government primary on Peel Street. St Joseph’s Primary School, a Catholic primary school that opened in 1907, is on Gladstone Street.
