The suburb

Kennington Reservoir and the Grassy Flat Creek Trail

Kennington’s name possibly comes from Kennington near Canterbury in England. A school opened here in 1911 and the post office ran from 1913 to 1972. In 1905 the Convent of the Good Shepherd, which included an orphanage, opened in what is now St Aidan’s Park. Girton College later used it as a campus until 1992 and the building is now private residences. Bendigo’s growth reached the area around 1958, when a drive-in cinema and St Therese’s Catholic church opened.

Today Kennington is a substantial residential area that includes aged persons accommodation. Kennington Reservoir on Reservoir Road has bush walking, picnic and BBQ spots and a fishing platform, with redfin and rainbow trout in the water. The Grassy Flat Creek Trail links it north to Grassy Flat Bushland Reserve and Strathdale Park. Recreation reserves sit beside the reservoir, with Kennington State Forest a little further east.

Kennington Primary School in Crook Street is a government primary that also hosts the Bendigo Deaf Facility. St Therese’s School is the local Catholic primary. The Strath shopping centre opened in 1988 with two supermarkets and 28 other shops. Brennan Park swimming pool and the suburb’s sporting facilities round out everyday life, alongside the recreation reserves beside Kennington Reservoir.
