The suburb
La Trobe University and the Flora Hill shops
Flora Hill grew as Bendigo’s housing development spread after World War II. Earlier, after World War I, a boys’ farm was set up here to teach agricultural skills. In 1966 part of that land went to the Bendigo Institute of Technology, whose Flora Hill campus opened in 1970 and later became part of La Trobe University. A timber Holy Trinity Anglican church was among the earliest buildings, replaced by the current brick church in 1972.
Today Flora Hill is a residential suburb shaped by the university. The La Trobe University Bendigo campus is here, with extensive student accommodation next to Bendigo South East 7-10 Secondary College in Ellis Street. Day to day there are the Flora Hill shops, a public reserve with a swimming pool and Strath Village shopping centre to the north. The suburb’s state primary school, which first enrolled students in 1952, closed at the end of 2007.
