A suburb south of the Bendigo city centre that backs onto state forest and is home to the Spring Gully Reservoir.

The suburb

Spring Gully Reservoir and the bush behind

The district supported gold mining and its name probably describes a natural feature of the area. The Spring Gully Reservoir was built in 1877 to supply Bendigo with water for homes and mining. Its construction submerged the Spring Gully Hotel. In 1930 the capacity was increased fivefold, supplying irrigation as far as White Hills and Huntly. Spring Gully Primary School opened in 1906.

Spring Gully stayed a small centre with a hall, store and hotel until Bendigo’s urban growth reached it in the 1970s. Today it is a suburb that backs onto state forest forming a catchment for the reservoir. The hall, a Lutheran church, a general store and the One Tree Hill Hotel are part of local life. A retirement village opened in 1982.
