A rural-residential and hobby farm locality south of Bendigo, set in a narrow valley along Sheepwash Creek with small farms and wineries.

The suburb

Sheepwash Creek, One Tree Hill and local wineries

Mandurang’s name comes from the Djadjawurrung word Munndorong, meaning large black cicada. It grew as a goldfield settlement and logging locality, with timber cutters working the Mandurang forest, now a State Forest. In 1866 vintner Jean De Ravin built cellars that his descendants restored and still run as Chateau Dore. A tannery here employed 30 workers until it closed in 1904. The local government school, which replaced an 1861 Methodist school in 1877, closed in 1994.

Today Mandurang is mostly small farms and wineries in a fairly narrow valley along Sheepwash Creek. One Tree Hill, a ridge north of the creek, has a reserve and lookout. Parts of Greater Bendigo National Park are here too, along with a marker for what is reputedly the geographic centre of Victoria. There are four wineries, an arts pavilion, a recreation reserve and a public hall. Tannery Lane is one of its scenic corners.
