The suburb

The Coliban channel, The Springs and Sedgwick Hall

Sedgwick was established in 1854, when the first freehold land was granted. It was known as Upper Emu Creek until 1901, when it was renamed after British geologist Adam Sedgwick. The Great Eastern Mine, founded in 1863, was the only mine in the district. In 1877 the water channel from Malmsbury to Bendigo was completed along the southern and western sides of Sedgwick. It still exists today.

A 1976 directory described Sedgwick as a horticultural district on Emu Creek with orchards, though most of the facilities it listed have since closed. Today it is a rural locality, with Sedgwick State Forest among its landmarks. The Springs and the Coliban channel waterworks are historic picnic spots. Sedgwick Hall, a public hall opened in 1958, the CFA rural fire station and tennis courts serve the community.
