Sheepwash Creek and the Warne Court sporting complex
Strathfieldsaye’s name probably comes from the Hampshire estate granted to the Duke of Wellington in 1817. The town was established in the 1860s, with a post office from 1864. The shire hall was built in 1869 beside the Duke of Wellington Hotel and hosted a school from 1873. A railway linked the town to Bendigo from 1888 to 1958. Good agricultural land along Sheepwash and Emu Creeks supported dairying and fruit and vegetable growing.
From the 1970s rural-residential subdivisions grew around the town, taking advantage of the landscape where Emu and Sheepwash Creeks meet. Today it is one of Bendigo’s outer suburbs, separated from the city by the Mandurang and Kennington State Forests. The Strathfieldsaye Shopping Hub on Strathfieldsaye Road has an IGA supermarket, post office, bakery, butcher, pharmacy, vet clinic, petrol station and pub, among other services.
The Warne Court sporting complex is home to Strathfieldsaye Storm football and netball and the Strathfieldsaye Cricket Club. The recreation reserve in Club Court hosts soccer, bowls, tennis, cricket and baseball clubs. Families have Strathfieldsaye Primary School, St Francis of the Fields School on Blucher Street and several kindergartens and early learning centres. Catherine McAuley College, a Catholic secondary, is in nearby Junortoun.
