Junortoun was originally called Homebush, after the Homebush Hotel and the Lazarus family’s Homebush Estate along the Splitters Creek valley. It was renamed around 1912 to avoid confusion with Homebush in New South Wales. ‘Junor’, the maiden name of the estate owner’s wife, was rejected as too close to Junee, so ‘toun’ was added. It is pronounced ‘joo-ner-t’n’. Lords Raceway opened here in 1954.
Rural residential subdivision began around the 1970s and Junortoun is now a growing suburb with a mix of low, medium and high density housing. Its facilities sit in a slight valley, with land rising south to the Junortoun ridge. The McIvor Highway runs through the suburb. The O’Keefe Rail Trail, on a former railway branch line, gives a walking and cycling route away from cars.
Lords Raceway hosts harness racing and greyhound racing. There is a CFA station, a Baptist church, a pub and an army training base. Victorian Places also lists a general store, post office, the Homebush hall and a caravan park. For secondary schooling, Catherine McAuley College’s Coolock campus is in the suburb, established in 1954 by the Vincentian Fathers.
