The suburb

Railway history and the Heathcote line trail

East Bendigo’s story is closely tied to industry. The Victorian Railways workshops were built in stages between 1911 and 1917 and were the area’s earliest large industrial site, running until 2002. A flourmill opened on Charleston Street in 1912 and the Victorian Co-op meat freezing works followed in Strickland Street in 1922. The suburb was also home to the saleyards, since moved to Maiden Gully, along with abattoirs, a sawmill and a council depot.

Most of those major industries have now gone. East Bendigo today is a mix of homes and industry, with landmarks such as the 1897 Anglican church in Strickland Street, the Newmarket Hotel, the Fleece Inn and the Bendigo Railway Goods Sheds. White Hill rises to 231 metres. There are shops on the McIvor Highway, a swimming pool built in 1931, the East Bendigo bowling club and a recreation trail along the former Heathcote railway line.
