White Hills real estate

VIC 3550 · City of Greater Bendigo · About 2 km from our East Bendigo office

A goldfields suburb on the Midland Highway between North Bendigo and East Bendigo, home to the Bendigo Botanic Gardens and Weeroona College.

The suburb

Bendigo Botanic Gardens and the Napier Street shops

White Hills is named for the colour of the clay that gold miners exposed in the 1850s. Bendigo Creek, site of the first gold find, runs through the suburb. A Wesleyan church school opened in 1853, the cemetery in 1854 and the post office in 1857. The cemetery has a Chinese section and is the resting place of Thomas Flanagan, who found the first gold at Kalgoorlie in 1893. Over the 20th century White Hills grew from a minor goldfields suburb into an urban one.

The Bendigo Botanic Gardens, established in 1857 as Bendigo’s first public gardens, are on Napier Street and on the Victorian Heritage Register. They are set around a billabong with a playspace, the 1925 Arch of Triumph war memorial, the Garden for the Future and the Larni Garingilang wetlands. Napier Street also has shops, a post office and a bank. The suburb has a recreation reserve, public pool, bowling club and the White Hills Cricket Club.

For schooling there is White Hills Primary School in Plumridge Street, Holy Rosary School and Weeroona College Bendigo on Napier Street, a government secondary for Years 7 to 10 that began as a technical school in 1960. The White Hills Sediments Gold Reserve keeps remains of Chinese gold workings. The Bendigo racecourse sits on the suburb’s edge, home of the Bendigo Cup in mid-November.
