Jackass Flat real estate
A growth area of new housing estates on Bendigo’s northern fringe, between Epsom and Eaglehawk, with a nature conservation reserve and parkland around it.
The suburb
New estates beside the Nature Conservation Reserve
Until the late 2010s Jackass Flat was mostly large private allotments used for rural living and agriculture. The City of Greater Bendigo then identified it as a new development area. About 170 hectares were rezoned and set out for development following Amendment C60 and the Bendigo Residential Development Strategy. The result is a growth area of new housing estates, bounded by Jobs Gully Road and Neangar Park Golf Club to the west, Edwards Road to the south and Bendigo Regional Park to the north.
Two parks cover nearly 24 per cent of the suburb’s area. The Jackass Flat Nature Conservation Reserve, established in 1980 and managed by Parks Victoria, covers 73.4 hectares. It is home to the rare Star-hair and Shrub Violet and holds a seed bank for ironbark, red box and grey box. Neangar Park Golf Club sits on the western boundary, Bendigo Regional Park lies to the north and part of the Coliban Water aqueduct marks the eastern edge.
