The suburb
Miners' cottages and the Nell Gwynne poppet head
Long Gully has a big place in Bendigo’s gold story. The Carlisle United Gold Mine, formerly the Kentish Mine, was the richest mine in Bendigo. The area around Ironbark and Victoria Hill was mined intensively from 1856 to 1949 and the Nell Gwynne poppet head dates from 1932. The fire brigade formed in 1873, the Methodist church was built in 1877 and St Matthew’s Anglican Church followed in 1883.
Wikipedia describes Long Gully as a working-class suburb with many older fibro houses and established light industry. Miners’ cottages and colonial-era houses, shops and hotels remain. The Rose of Australia Hotel and the Manchester Arms Hotel are both still operating. The suburb originally included Ironbark, which is now a separate suburb.
Eaglehawk Road, now the Loddon Valley Highway, runs through the commercial area near Havilah and Creeth Streets. The Bendigo RSL club is on Havilah Road and Victorian Places notes a sports reserve and swimming pool on Havilah Street. The old Long Gully Primary School closed in 1992, with most students moving to Comet Hill Primary School.
