Ironbark real estate

VIC 3550 · City of Greater Bendigo · About 5 km from our East Bendigo office

A gold-rush suburb north-west of the Bendigo city centre, between Golden Square and Long Gully, with the Calder and Loddon Valley Highways running through.

The suburb

Ironbark Gully gold and old highway hotels

Ironbark takes its name from Ironbark Gully, a rich alluvial gold site that miners had fully taken up by mid-1852. Hustlers Reef, found in 1853, produced rich yields. The Gold Mines Hotel and Ironbark Hill primary school both date from 1861. A second school opened in Violet Street about five years later. Both schools closed in 1928. For many years Ironbark was part of Long Gully, until it was gazetted as a separate suburb in 1999.

Ironbark was once a prominent business centre, with hotels and businesses lining what are now the Loddon Valley Highway and the Calder Highway. Some of those hotels remain as landmarks, including the Gold Mines Hotel on the Calder Highway and the British and American Hotel, from about 1880, on the Loddon Valley Highway. West of the Loddon Valley Highway, the Victoria Hill conservation area preserves bare mined terrain from the gold era.
