The suburb

The gold discovery site and Golden Square pool

Golden Square is where gold was found in the Bendigo Creek bed in spring 1851, commonly credited to Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Farrell. A monument on the Bendigo Creek Trail near the Maple Street Bridge marks the discovery. A township was surveyed in 1854. Trams ran along High Street until 1973. Commersdale House on Panton Street dates from 1898 and part of the 1875 school still stands at Laurel and Panton Streets.

Housing ranges from small cottages to larger Edwardian brick homes. Golden Square Shopping Centre covers everyday shopping and High Street, the Calder Highway, runs through the suburb. The Golden Square Swimming Pool on Maple Street, first built as baths in 1918, was saved from closure and reopened in 2013 as a volunteer-run community pool.

There are three reserves with sports ovals, a bowls club and a pony club. The Golden Square Bulldogs Football and Netball Club won five consecutive senior premierships from 2009 to 2013. Families can choose between Golden Square Primary School and Specimen Hill Primary School on Inglewood Street, both government primary schools.
