Bendigo real estate

VIC 3550 · City of Greater Bendigo · About 3 km from our East Bendigo office

Central Bendigo is the city’s gold-rush CBD, home to Rosalind Park, Hargreaves Mall, Sacred Heart Cathedral and the railway station linking the region to Melbourne.

The suburb

Rosalind Park, Hargreaves Mall and Charing Cross

Gold was found on Bendigo Creek in October 1851 and the town grew to about 40,000 people in under a year. It was officially Sandhurst from 1853 until 1891, though it was always called Bendigo, a name usually traced to a shepherd nicknamed after prizefighter William ‘Bendigo’ Thompson. Buildings from those years include the Shamrock Hotel, the Old Bendigo Law Courts, the Alexandra Fountain at Charing Cross and the Joss House built by Chinese miners.

The CBD is the main retail centre of the city, covering around 20 blocks of mixed use with Hargreaves Mall at its heart. Rosalind Park skirts the central city with Victorian-style gardens and statuary. Lake Weeroona sits beside Bendigo Creek. For culture there is the Bendigo Art Gallery on View Street next to the Capital Theatre, Ulumbarra Theatre in the former Sandhurst Gaol, the Golden Dragon Museum and the Central Deborah Gold Mine.

Bendigo railway station is the hub for trains to Melbourne, Swan Hill, Echuca and Eaglehawk to Inglewood. Buses radiate from the CBD with the main terminus at the station and the heritage tram still runs. The Calder Freeway links Bendigo to Melbourne in under two hours by car. For schools, Bendigo Senior Secondary College is on Gaol Road and St Kilian’s School, a Catholic primary, is on Havelock Street.
