The suburb
The Joss House and the Bendigo Showgrounds
Chinese goldminers worked North Bendigo from the mid-1850s and the area once known as Emu Point had a large Chinese community in the late 19th century. The Bendigo Joss House on Finn Street was built around 1865, restored by the National Trust and is on the Victorian Heritage Register. The Bendigo gas works of 1860 in Weeroona Avenue are also on the register.
An Ordnance Factory opened here at the start of World War II. It is now part of Thales Australia, which makes Bushmaster protected military vehicles. After the war, mining land was levelled for housing. Victorian Places describes the suburb as a mix of working class houses and industrial landscape. Lake Weeroona is in the vicinity.
Lightning Reef Primary School on Holmes Road sits beside the Bendigo Showgrounds, with a YMCA early learning centre next door. St Peter’s School, a Catholic primary, is on Fenton Street, with a football and netball club and sports reserve beside it. The California Gully and Jackass Flat box-ironbark nature reserves run along the northern border.
