California Gully real estate
California Gully is a gold-mining suburb along Eaglehawk Road, north-west of the Bendigo city centre, with heritage-listed buildings and a local primary school.
The suburb
Bell Topper Hill and the Eaglehawk Road township
California Gully takes its name from miners who came from the Californian diggings and found gold in the gully in 1852. The North Johnson mine group worked here from 1861 to 1920 and many Cornish miners arrived in the 1870s. Bell Topper Hill, west of the township, is said to be named after English miners burning their bell topper hats, which did not suit local conditions.
The township grew along Eaglehawk Road in the early 1870s around the White Horse Hotel and the former Methodist church, now Uniting. That church is on the Victorian Heritage Register, as is the California Gully Primary School building, the 1882 to 1883 Bell Topper Hill school. Along Eaglehawk Road, 1870s buildings and mining-era sites still show the suburb’s gold-mining past.
Day to day, there is a shopping centre near the Woolpack Hotel and two reserves with ovals. California Gully Primary School is the local government primary school. St Lawrence Court aged care centre on Upper California Gully Road was opened by the Anglican church in 1968. Eaglehawk Road runs through the suburb towards the Bendigo city centre.
