The suburb
Bendigo Pottery, Epsom station and the Sunday market
Epsom was probably named after Epsom Downs in Surrey, inspired by the nearby Bendigo racecourse. It was first mined for gold in the 1850s, while its alluvial soil was farmed to supply the diggings. George Guthrie founded Bendigo Pottery here in 1858 and its stables and kilns are heritage listed. When gold declined, selectors turned to vineyards and orchards. Later, market gardens grew tomatoes for processing.
Today Epsom is a developing outer northern suburb that keeps a semi-rural character, with market gardens and poultry farms still part of the mix. A new housing estate has been built behind the Epsom Village shopping centre. Bendigo and Piccaninny Creeks meet here and the Bendigo racecourse is nearby, the same racecourse that probably gave Epsom its name.
Epsom railway station on Station Street reopened in 2014 with V/Line services on the Bendigo and Echuca lines. The original station opened in 1864 and closed in 1970. Locally there is a primary school, a sports centre, a public hall, a caravan park and a large Sunday market. The Midland Highway links Epsom with central Bendigo.
