Huntly real estate

VIC 3551 · City of Greater Bendigo · About 9 km from our East Bendigo office

A township north-east of Bendigo on the Midland Highway, just beyond the urban fringe, with gold-rush, market garden and shire history.

The suburb

Heritage shire hall and the Huntly Hawks

Huntly’s name is thought to come from Huntly in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It had its own gold rush in 1859 and in the 1860s a company mined the deep lead from Epsom to Huntly. The area also farmed and market gardened for the goldfields. In the 1920s Huntly tomatoes supplied Melbourne markets and preserving factories. The first shire hall from 1867 and the former court house from 1874 are both heritage listed.

Victorian Places notes that population decline reversed from the 1980s as more homes were built within commuting distance of Bendigo. Subsidised housing estates were set up on the northern fringe in 2012 to encourage skilled workers to settle. The Midland Highway runs through town and a natural gas connection to the town has been confirmed.

Huntly Primary School on Brunel Street takes Prep to Year 6. The Huntly Hawks play in the Heathcote District Football League. The town also has the 1922 memorial hall, the Victoria Hotel, a war memorial, Anglican and Catholic churches and public reserves. The Bendigo to Echuca railway opened in 1864 just south of the township.
