Sailors Gully real estate

VIC 3556 · City of Greater Bendigo · About 8 km from our East Bendigo office

Sailors Gully is an outer northern suburb north-west of the Bendigo city centre, just west of Eaglehawk, with roots in the 1852 gold discovery.

The suburb

Gold rush village along Sailors Gully Road

Gold was found at Sailors Gully in 1852, reportedly by sailors who had deserted their ships for the diggings. A Church of England school opened in 1855 and the government school replaced it in 1874. The village, also known as Nerring, became part of the Borough of Eaglehawk in 1862. Its Gothic-style Catholic church dates from 1864 and the Sailors Gully Hotel from about 1866, rebuilt in 1908.

Most of the village’s public buildings line Sailors Gully Road, which is also home to Eaglehawk North Primary School, a government primary. The suburb has Sailors Gully Hall and a mission hall built in 1938 for Methodist and Presbyterian worship. On Beelzebub Gully Road off Growlers Road, the heritage-listed New Moon Quartz mine site dates from 1860 and keeps above-ground structures from the 1890s.
