Myers Flat real estate
A rural-residential district on the Loddon Valley Highway north-west of Bendigo, with Whipstick forest reserves on either side and a strong Irish heritage.
The suburb
St Augustine's, the Allies Hotel and Irish roots
Myers Flat is named after Thomas Myers, co-proprietor of the Weddikar pastoral run. European settlement began in 1845, when the area was known as Myers Creek. Gold was found in 1852, but farm selection from 1869 brought more lasting growth, mostly Irish families growing stock feed, fruit and vegetables. St Augustine’s Catholic Church on Sailors Gully Road, built in German Gothic style, opened in 1864.
That Irish character is still strong, with an active hurling team. Today Myers Flat is mainly valued as a residential location close to Bendigo, with Whipstick forest reserves to its east and west. The Loddon Valley Highway runs through it and the Allies Hotel is a local landmark. The former Sandhurst Town tourist attraction, developed in the 1970s, sits to the south-west and has since stopped operating.
