Gold was discovered at Maiden Gully in 1859 and the township was linked with nearby Myers Flat. The origin of the name is unclear, though the gully itself lies in forest north of the township. The primary school opened in 1875 as Myers Creek, was renamed Maiden Gully in 1938 and has operated continuously since. Balgownie Vineyard was established in 1969.
Maiden Gully has seen enormous growth in recent years, centred north of the Calder Highway in the Robin Hill Estate and south-west of the highway. A small pocket of semi-rural acreage remains west of Monsants Road. In 2014 land on Edwards Road was rezoned from farming to residential for subdivision.
The township has a general store and post office, a community hall and a caravan park. The recreation reserve hosts cricket and tennis clubs. Maiden Gully YCW Football Netball Club plays in the Loddon Valley Football Netball League. The Eaglehawk golf course is listed among local facilities. Maiden Gully Primary School is the government primary school and the Calder Highway runs through the suburb.
