The Calder junction and Marong Golf Club

Marong takes its name from a Djadjawurrung word for the Murray River pine. Bullocks Creek became a gold-washing place and Commissioners’ camp in 1852, but Marong was never a gold town. The school opened in 1859, the post office in 1860 and the railway station on the Bendigo to Inglewood line in 1876. From 1908 until 1994 it was the administrative centre of Marong shire. The former Shire Hall still stands.

Victorian Places describes Marong as a rural township whose highway location and closeness to Bendigo have driven some residential growth. Day to day there is Marong Primary School, a kindergarten, the Marong Family Hotel, a general store, three churches and a caravan park on the highway. The Calder Highway (A79) and Calder Alternative Highway (A790) meet at the township.

For sport there is a large recreation reserve, Marong Golf Club on Ravenswood Road, a bowls club and a swimming pool. The Marong Panthers football club plays in the Loddon Valley Football League. In 2003 a business park on about 300 hectares along the Calder Highway was proposed, according to Victorian Places.
