Woodvale real estate
A rural locality north-west of Eaglehawk and Bendigo where farms and rural residential acreages sit alongside the Whipstick forest.
The suburb
Whipstick forest and the memorial cypress trees
The Dja Dja Wurrung name for the area was Nerring. European settlement began in 1845, gold was found in 1852 and the area became known as Sydney Flat before being renamed Woodvale in the 1920s. State School No. 1531 opened in 1875 and closed in 1962. It is now the public hall. Cypress trees planted after World War I honour its former pupils.
Over half of Woodvale is Whipstick forest. Landholdings mix farms with rural residential acreages. The community has a recreation reserve, a CFA station, the public hall and a progress association. The bush fire brigade dates back to 1932, while the last hotel closed in 1970. The memorial cypress trees still stand at the former school.
