Sebastian real estate
A small rural locality north of Bendigo on the rim of the Whipstick, shaped by the Frederick the Great gold mine and the Swan Hill railway line.
The suburb
Frederick the Great mine and the Whipstick
Sebastian is named after Sebastian Schmidt, who found gold here in May 1863. From 1864 the Frederick the Great mine worked a rich reef until 1912, yielding 170,000 ounces of gold. The township declined after the mine closed. Old gold workings remain across the area, the Whipstick forest lies to the east and the former school is now the community hall. There is also a recreation reserve and a reservoir.
