Elysian Flat diggings and the old Shamrock Hotel
Gold was discovered at Neilborough in 1857, when the diggings were called Elysian Flat. By the late 1850s around 2,000 people and 50 to 60 stores were here. Today it is a rural locality. The former Shamrock Hotel and Store on Whewell Street, a Federation brick building of about 1904, is in the Heritage Overlay. Remains of eucalyptus distilleries that used Whipstick forest material can still be found.
