Raywood real estate

VIC 3570 · City of Greater Bendigo · About 25 km from our East Bendigo office

A small rural township north of Bendigo on the Swan Hill railway line, the most northerly of the goldfields in the Bendigo-Whipstick forest area.

The suburb

Nil Desperandum gold and a reopened station

Raywood grew from an alluvial gold find in 1863 by a miner from the Sebastian diggings, with quartz reefs found the following year. The most productive was the Nil Desperandum. Earlier called Thunder Plains, Raywood was proclaimed a borough in 1865, when it had seven hotels and a bank branch. The railway to Bendigo arrived in 1882. Hugh Victor McKay, creator of the Sunshine Harvester, was born here in 1865.

Today Raywood is a minor district centre in mainly flat, open country, with farming based mainly on sheep grazing and cereals. The township has a hotel, general store, butcher, motor garage, golf club, swimming pool, recreation reserve, Anglican, Catholic and Uniting churches and the soldiers’ memorial hall built after World War I. Raywood Primary School is a small rural school and the Bendigo Gliding Club is based in Raywood.

Raywood station on the V/Line Swan Hill line reopened on 17 July 2022 under Regional Rail Revival, after passenger services stopped in 1981. Eaglehawk and Dingee are the neighbouring stations. Between 2010 and 2013 the Sebastian-Raywood pipeline delivered a secure water supply to residents. Sprinter John Donaldson, known as the Blue Streak, was also born at Raywood, in 1886.
