Flour mill, river rapids and a vanilla slice
Bridgewater on Loddon began as a mining settlement after the water at nearby Inglewood became unsuitable for drinking. A bridge over the Loddon River followed in 1862 and the post office opened in 1868. The flour mill opened in 1874 and has run continuously since, one of five operating mills in Victoria. The WaterWheel vineyard and winery has sat beside it since 1972. The district grew on dairying, sheep grazing and cereals.
The town straddles the Loddon River. Downstream of the Calder Highway bridge, the Mill Rapid is a Grade 3 whitewater section used for kayaking. A caravan park sits beside the river. Sport covers golf, tennis, bowls and football in the Loddon Valley league, with golf played here since 1921. The Bridgewater Bakehouse won Australia’s best vanilla slice in 2018 and 2019.
Bridgewater Primary School on Eldon Street has taught local children since 1871 and caters for prep to year 6. The memorial hall opened in 1923 and also houses a free library. The town has a hotel, a motel and three churches. The Calder Highway runs through town. The railway station closed in 2007.
