The suburb
Ravenswood homestead and the railway tunnel
Ravenswood’s name was first used for a pastoral run taken up in 1840 and was probably inspired by Walter Scott. Its homestead, designed by Bendigo architect William Vahland in the late 1850s, is on the Victorian Heritage Register. The 1862 railway cut a tunnel through granite hills north of the township. Two creeks and undulating country once drew excursionists from Bendigo. The former Junction Hotel dates from 1872.
