The Campaspe River and the O'Keefe Rail Trail
Axedale takes its name from the Axedale pastoral run of 1840. The Campaspe Hotel opened in 1855, as did the Axedale Tavern, known as Drakes Hotel for almost a century. It became a minor goldfield in 1858 on the road between the Bendigo and McIvor goldfields. The town was surveyed and proclaimed in 1861. St Mary’s Church stands on a hill in the centre and St Andrew’s Uniting Church opened in 1869.
The township sits alongside the Campaspe River, which flows from Lake Eppalock. The town was connected to Bendigo’s water supply in 2009. Axedale Primary School opened in 1870 and its 1870s brick building at 81 High Street is on the Victorian Heritage Database. The O’Keefe Rail Trail runs from Bendigo through Axedale and on to Heathcote for walking and cycling.
In town there is the Axedale Tavern, a cafe, a general store and petrol station, plus a police station that opened in 2012. Axedale Golf Club on Mitchell Street has 18 holes and more than 450 members. There are also tennis courts, a recreation reserve and a public hall. Victorian Places also notes two wineries on the road to Goornong.
