Midland Highway township with a reopened station
Goornong’s name may come from an Aboriginal word meaning kangaroo, apple, or a plant with an unpleasant smell. The district lay outside the Bendigo goldfields and relied on farming. A Presbyterian school opened in 1863, the railway arrived in 1864 and by 1865 the town had the Railway and Goornong hotels. Sir Eugene Gorman, a founding member of the Australian Council for Civil Liberties, was born here.
Irrigation has sustained farming and a fairly stable population in the district. An Anglican church opened in 1880 and an agricultural hall in 1889. Campaspe Park homestead, east of the town, is heritage listed. Around town there are two large reserves, sports grounds, a swimming pool and a memorial hall. There are also a hotel, a garage, engineering works and grain silos.
Goornong railway station reopened in December 2021 on the V/Line Echuca line, with trains to Southern Cross and Echuca. The original station operated from 1864 to 1979. The town also has a government primary school, which replaced the Presbyterian school in 1875. Goornong sits on the Midland Highway, which links the town with Bendigo.
